Morgan

Name: Morgan M.

Year: Junior

Major: Planning, Public Policy and Managment and Political Science

Can you walk me through your thought process when you got dressed this morning? Well it’s fall so I’ve been trying to wear more fall colors but it’s also pretty warm out. I just basically like dresses, they’re one of my favorite things to put on and layer. I’ll probably through on a coat later that I keep in my backpack. It’s nice to layer with things like scarves since I’m from a place that the weather doesn’t change as much. I’m from Virginia so when I come out to Oregon I definitely have to change how I dress and wear a lot more layers.

Do you like that aspect of living in Oregon? I actually do, because once winter comes I really like sweaters and things like that. I think it’s [wearing a dress] is just a really easy way to take something pretty simple and make it a lot more fun.

DSC_0181

Morgan’s denim dress is from H&M. Denim dresses are the perfect Summer to Fall transition piece since they have the summer shape and the fall material.

How would you describe your style? Usually pretty clean cut. Some days I’ll have loose casual things on and other days I’ll wear preppier things. I’m pretty casual all the time.

DSC_0191

Morgan’s scarf is from Target, a great place to find stylish accent pieces on a budget.

DSC_0188

These leather boots from DSW are perfect for running around campus during those busy days.

What about your daily schedule makes it so that that’s how you choose to dress? I’m always on the go because I’m a really busy person; I’m involved in a lot of different things. I kind of have to do that because I don’t have time to go back [home] to change. So, I’ll be gone from my room for twelve plus hours. So I have to be comfortable and move around pretty quickly.

Carina

Name: Carina Garcia

Year: Junior

Major: Journalism

DSC_0003

Carina experiments with trends in a slouchy cardigan and flared ’70s inspired jeans– both are from Gap.

Can you tell me a little bit about your outfit today?

I got the pants from Gap and I’ve really been wanting to try the whole ’70s look that has come back with the flared bell bottoms. So, I really love these jeans and I just really wanted to wear them. I’ve noticed that pointy boots go better with it. I guess I just threw it together.

DSC_0006

Styling shoes with wide legged pants can be difficult, but these jeans hit perfectly on Carina’s boots from Macy’s.

Is the ’70s aesthetic something that you’ve always liked or something that you’re trying out?

I just keep up with what is in style and I’ve noticed that lately it’s been revived. I never really thought about it and it’s something that I’ve never tried out. I really like the jeans which is mostly what I was going for.

DSC_0007

Carina’s purse is from Nordstrom and is a great statement piece without distracting too much from the outfit.

What is one staple item you can’t live without?

I think maybe this purse. I’m super super picky when it comes to purses and I love the size of it. I can fit everything I need in it.

Maria

Name: Maria N.

Major: Psychology and General Social Science

Year: Sophomore

What drew you to your majors? I love psychology and human behavior. I decided to study general social science because I’m interested in business, but I didn’t want to be a business major.

What has been one of your favorite classes? Psychology of Trauma, it was fascinating.

DSC_0144

Maria rocks a colorful floral romper from Macy’s.

What do you want to do professionally? I love wine. I want to do something with wine, maybe be a connoisseur or sommelier.

What is the best wine to pair with a sunny day and street fair food? Any red wine. It doesn’t matter as long as it’s red wine.

How would you describe your personal style? *Asks friend*

Friend: Interesting and different. Her style is very lively.

Maria: Yeah I like to pop out of the crowd. With a vibrant day like this, I don’t want to wear grey or other neutral colors.

DSC_0152

Her trendy black jellies are from Forever 21.

How do you get the confidence to standout?

Friend: She doesn’t care what people think.

Maria: Yeah. I go with the flow.

What have you been inspired by recently? Recently, I’ve gotten into Pinterest, but I don’t really look at it that much. Really, I’m inspired by whatever I see on a rack that I like. Usually, it’s not like what other people are wearing. Then, I know I want that.

I love your makeup. What do you like about makeup? I love makeup. I just retweeted this Tweet that said, “I can cake on makeup. I can do whatever I want with my face. It’s my face.” I remember also Tweeting this thing about misogynistic views of makeup, like “She puts on too much makeup. Why does she do that?” Well it’s my fucking face. I love makeup because I can do different styles and colors.

Whose makeup are you inspired by? I love Rita Ora. I love Rihanna’s lipstick. Anything lipstick.

DSC_0160

What role does fashion play in your life? It’s definitely an expression of my personality. I can show my personality without having to verbally express myself or prove who I am.

What about your personality do your clothes give off? That I’m vibrant. I hate the word outgoing because it’s overused, but outgoing. My clothes also show that I wear what I want.

Who were some of your early style inspirations? My mom. We shop together a lot.

Do you two have similar styles? Definitely different. She likes older, more neutral colors. I’m sucking away her youth and getting all the colorful clothes.

What do you like about shopping together? Aside from the fact that she usually pays, she’ll tell me straight up if something is good or bad. She’ll say, “Are you sure about that? For the price and style, you can get something better. Is it really worth it?” She’s my conscious.

DSC_0165

Her earrings are from Forever 21.

As someone who is petite, do you ever struggle to find clothes that fit you? I hate focusing on sizes. If something fits, size shouldn’t really matter. I wear really baggy clothes sometimes. You should wear whatever you want to wear and don’t define it as being too big. If you like that style, wear it.

How did you find the confidence to wear what you want? I’m not sure. That’s the thing. When I was younger, I would always wear dresses, and people would always say, “You’re the dress girl.” I would say, “Yeah I am” and embrace it. I never had anyone telling me what I should and shouldn’t wear. So I’ve always had the confidence to wear what I want.

Corrine

Name: Corrine E.

Major: Business

Year: Graduate

How would you describe your personal style? Just whatever I feel like wearing that day. I don’t really have a set style. I’m not always in dresses. Some days, I’ll just be in sweatpants. Comfort is always important.

What inspired today’s outfit? I had a meeting this morning, so I had to be a little bit more dressed up.

Who do you get your style inspiration from? Nicki Minaj. I’m in love with Nicki. I love anything bright. I usually wear a lot of patterned leggings and things like that.

DR0000_0055 48000 2

Corrine looks sharp on a rainy day with a coat from Macy’s.

What have you been doing since you graduated? I work on campus for the College of Arts and Sciences.

Why did you decide to study business? U of O has an excellent business school, specifically for my sports business concentration. I was really attracted to that and how specific of a major that could be.

What do you want to do in business? Hopefully work for an NFL team in player engagement or something like that.

Why are you interested in sports? I think it brings community together and has a lot of potential to do good, but it’s not really an outlet that has been tapped into.

What is the power in having a connection with athletes? What does that do for a team? Often people look up to professional athletes, and if athletes are able to interact more with the community and emphasize the importance of physical activity, they can do a lot of good with their status.

DSC_0181

Her sporty, practical backpack is from Nike.

Do you feel as a woman, sports business, particularly for football, is harder to get into? Yes, I’m a little apprehensive about it, but I think that ultimately, skills and personality will overcome gender. Hopefully I’ll just prove myself, and I can compete with the boys, much like Nicki has in the rap world.

Has your style has changed since you graduated and entered the professional world? I think I’m more aware of what I have to wear on certain days depending on the activities. I may have to be more dressed up now, but I still always go with comfort over style.

How can you combine comfort and style? It’s tough. I’ve had to try and find a balance, but I try to find yoga pants that are still stylish and pair a button-up shirt with it.

DSC_0186

She looks professional in this stripped Ann Taylor Loft Dress.

How do you get the courage to wear more unique pieces like your jacket? I feel if you have confidence, that’s really what brings an outfit together. If you are going to wear something bright, be happy with what you’re wearing. If you’re nervous walking around, that’s going to show. If you’re thinking, “I have these bright pants on and I’m going to wear them,” then it doesn’t really matter.

Have you always had that confidence or did you have to gain it somehow? I’m not sure. I feel like I’ve always had it. There are definitely days where I feel more nervous wearing something than others, but ultimately, you are who you are. Be the best you can be. There’s no sense in competing with other people.

Do you notice if you stand out from the people around you or fit in? I don’t really notice. I figure everyone is their own individual, so we all stand out in some way.

Aly

Name: Aly L.

Major: Journalism

Year: Senior

How did you chose your major? I chose journalism because it was the end of my sophomore year, and I had no idea what I wanted to do. So, I thought, “Hey, journalism has a lot of options.” So I chose it, and I ended up really liking it. I chose well.

Aly_fulbody

Aly’s pants are from Korea and were a gift from her aunt. The blouse went well with the pants, so she bought it as well.

What has been your most inspiring moment within journalism this far? I think it was when I discovered that I really enjoyed making videos. I think it clicked when I made a documentary about a nudist resort. This was around the end of last year, and it just hit that this was something that I enjoyed doing. I was really thankful that I happened to choose a major that I enjoyed doing not just as school work, but something that I enjoyed doing in my own free time.

Have you used your education in journalism in your personal life? Um, yeah. When I go on trips, I bring my camera and make little videos for fun. This sounds corny, but I just kind of see things differently. I see things through my lens, and instead of just taking pictures, I will make little videos.

Aly_angle

Why video? Well I realized that when I was young, my mom never really took any video of me. She just took a lot of photos. But think about kids growing up in this day and age: They have so many videos from their parents. I just think it is a really cool thing to look back on old videos. It seems more real than photos because it’s moving and stuff, and you can see how you acted at a certain age and stuff like that. I wish there would have been more videos of me. So when I have a kid, I’m going to be the mom that has hours and hours of cool videos that I can show them when they’re older.

What have the photos from your past taught you about yourself? (Laughs) I was a fat boy when I was a baby. Yeah, that’s what that taught me. I am seriously glad that I have the head of hair that I have now. When I was younger, I had these wimpy little pigtails that my mom would try to gather up. I was like eight, and you usually have hair by the time you’re eight. I looked like a balding old man when I was eight, and when I was three, I kind of looked like Buddha.

Aly_hair

“I am seriously glad that I have the head of hair that I have now.”

How has your style changed since you were fat Buddha? Oh my gosh! My mom used to dress me in frills and girly things to make people be like, “Ah yes that is a girl despite the fact that it looks like a boy.”  I still cringe when I look back on the stuff that I wore in middle and high school. I think, “What was I thinking? Was I thinking?” I actually like my style now that I’m an adult. I don’t think I will look back in a few years and cringe. I still wear some clothes that I’ve had for a really long time, the things that I can’t let go. Like my jacket I’ve actually had for a long time. I’ve had it since seventh or eighth grade when I was in Korea. It was only $5.

Do you get a lot of your clothes from Korea? Yeah, definitely. In my wardrobe right now, I would say about 70% of my clothes are from Korea. When I am here, I don’t have as much money to shop. So when I’m here, I shop in little bits, but when I go to Korea, I go full on, like bring an empty suitcase shopping. I prefer this because I don’t end up having the same clothes as other people. It sets me apart a little, but I like the clothes more.

Aly_shoes

Aly’s shoes are from Korea. Her mom bought them for her birthday as a good investment. Aly agrees, “They totally are.”

Do you like fashion because it sets you apart from others? I don’t know. It’s not like I read fashion magazines or blogs or anything like that. Fashion is just what I put on in the morning. It feels normal to me to dress up more, and I think that’s because I attended some of high school in Seoul, Korea.  Seoul is really concerned about looks, fashion and how you represent yourself. You will never see a girl in Seoul go out in yoga pants or sweatpants. For the most part, it is heels, sleek and chic. It’s like skirts and blouses and that kind of thing, and I got accustomed to that. When I came here, it just kind of carried over.

Aly_purse

Her Coach purse was an early graduation gift from her mother.

What are the biggest differences between Seoul and Eugene? Yoga pants! Yoga pants are just not a thing in Korea. People there would be so scandalized by yoga pants. They would be like, “Why aren’t you wearing a shirt or dress over that? I can see your whole butt!” Over there, they’re really more modest I guess. In Korean society, you’re supposed to be modest and demure.  Over there, you are just expected to be more ladylike. It just seems like for the most part, young-twenty-somethings are just more polished compared to here. You know here, you can just go out in whatever you’re comfortable in, which is usually a more casual look. There, it is much more about being sophisticated.

Aly_owlandrings

Aly wears one of the ten owl necklaces that she owns. Her rings are from “…the two most important people in her life,” her mother and her boyfriend.

Why do you think there is such an emphasis on sophistication in Seoul? Well, the short version is that ever since the Korean War, South Korea has become a huge metropolis in a short period of time. They had to deal with a burst of growth and a lot of new changes in a sudden manner. It grew too fast. Now, people are so concerned with what it is that makes them look like they have money.  Like how can you present yourself to people in a way that they can respect you? I guess having money is respect. That is why you go to a good school, so you can have a good job and lots of money and be successful and happy. I think it has kind of made society a little bit shallow and way too materialistic. I think the girls there care too much about how they look.

What do the girls there do to make you feel this way? Well Korea has over taken Brazil for the number one country for plastic surgery. 70% or 80% of the girls graduating from high school get double eyelid surgery. They do this to make their eyes look bigger and more “western.” It is amazing; it is like so casual and so normal. People tell me all the time to get it. They’re like, “you wouldn’t have to wear as much makeup,” and “I’ll pay for it. Come on it isn’t even that expensive.” About three years ago, I think I considered it. I thought it would make my life easier but then I realized that I didn’t want to conform to that and become like that. It is very conformist. Like the modesty thing too. Why can’t I wear an open backed shirt in Korea in the summer? It is hot as fuck there. It’s the whole sheep mentality, which is despicable, and that is why I can’t live in Korea for extended periods of time. They do have good clothes, but I don’t think it’s worth it. I think you should be able to wear what makes you comfortable and not have to take a knife to your face, you know? It is so messed up. This is why I love Eugene. No one really gives a shit. That’s what is great about Eugene. I can only imagine what it would be like if people in Seoul could see Eugene. (Laughs) I think it would be good for them.

Aly_glasses (1)

Aly chose to abstain from double eyelid surgery, “…I realized that I didn’t want to conform…”

What would they learn from experiencing Eugene? They would see that variety is good. Think about the psychology of it, young girls graduating from high school in Seoul think that they need to get eyelid surgery done to be beautiful. It is so messed up. What taught these girls to feel this way? I mean probably Hollywood and the media. Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Their satisfaction of life is way low on the list. I don’t think what you look like on the outside translates to how you feel on the inside. I have met some of the happiest people in Eugene who wear what they want and have never gone to a hair salon. In Korea, they can look like a super model but not be happy on the inside.

Judy

Name: Judy H.

Major: Journalism and Italian

Year: Senior

Website: www.judyholtz.com

Why did you decide to study journalism and Italian? I’ve always been interested in journalism. My dad worked for CNN, so I’ve always been in that realm. I decided to study Italian because my mom was actually pregnant with me when she went to Italy. So, I feel I have this weird embryo connection to there. I also really love the language, the fashion, and the food.

What are your plans for once you graduate? I’m actually doing a fifth year. Yeah! To do more journalism work and double major in Italian. I’m studying abroad this summer in Italy. I’ll be in Southern Italy. I’ve been there a few times, but I’ve only been in the North.

DSC_0107

Judy shines in the sun with a flowy white dress from Francesca’s.

What is your focus in journalism? I’m studying multimedia, so videography and photography.

Is there a dream publication or media outlet you would love to work for? I actually talked to Chad Mumm today. He is part of Vox media, so it would be cool to work with vox.com and stuff like that. I also do a lot of food photography, so I would love to work for any food publication.

What tips do you have for food photography? Just photograph something that someone would want to eat. Make it look as delicious as possible.

DSC_0114

Her rings are from around the world, including New York, Mexico and H Boutique at Fifth Street Public Market in Eugene.

What’s the most challenging thing you have photographed? I had to take pictures of babies, like really small kids, and they are so difficult. As cute as they are, they are really fussy, and they don’t want to stay still. They don’t want to smile, but they’re really cute.

How would you describe your personal style? People say it’s classy, but kind of eclectic. I really love jewelry. I think it’s really awesome. I wasn’t a big jewelry fan, and I still never wear earrings. But now I dress kind of urban chic.

DSC_0112

Her trendy studded boots are Vince Camuto.

Who were some of your early fashion inspirations? I’m inspired by Audrey Hepburn, for sure. Everything she wears is black and very classic, sleek and flatters the body. I really like that. Right now, I’m really interested in looking at blogs and Pinterest. Oh my god, I’m on Pinterest every day. I like metals and anything that looks a little more hardcore, but you can make it softer. I like that a lot.

What are some of your Pinterest boards? Well there’s “My Style” board, which isn’t a really interesting one. Then I also have “Beauty is a beast” because I don’t really like to make myself all beautiful and wear a lot of makeup. But I still like to look good.

DSC_0113

Her simple metal necklace is from Banana Republic.

Is there any connection between your love of food and food photography and the way you dress? There’s not really a connection but, I think they’re both really artistic things. You can have fun designing different foods and plates and stuff like that. You can also have fun with your style as well.

If you could have the clothes from any TV or movie, what would it be? Probably La Dolce Vita because it’s a very classic, 1960s fashion. The characters are really elegant and put together, but very simple. I like very clean, simple things.

DSC_0116

What appeals to you about more simple clothes? I think it’s really nice to see the lines and shapes of a person’s body. I think it’s really feminine in a way. You get to see how they look, and it’s not really busy. Really busy things are not very fun to me. I’m pretty boring in that way.

Khahlela Jess

Name: Khahlela Jess R.

Major: Elementary Education

Year: Sophomore

DSC_0126

Khahlela embraces the sun in a shirt and skirt from Target and a jean jacket from a friend.

What grade do you eventually want to teach? I would like to teach first or second grade. I really love kids. This might sound kind of cheesy, but education is really important. I also think it’s really cool to be the first person a kid is educated by. When first graders come and see you, you’re the first teacher they’ve every really had.

How would you describe your personal style? It’s a mix of a lot of things. I like to dress up, not formal, but wearing things that are nicer. I also like to wear things I get for free or are hand-me-downs or are funky things that I decide to buy and wear.

Do you wear a lot of clothes from friends? Yes, all the time. I like the exchange. If I borrow something from one of my friends or housemates, I loan them something else, and we can mix our styles together. It’s fun to play around.DSC_0129

She got her shoes at Valley River Center, and her socks are a recent thrift store find.

What have you been inspired by recently? I’ve been really inspired by the weather. I think I chose this shirt because it was really sunny. I’ve been in a really good spring mood with lots of good vibes. I’m trying to wear clothes that reflect that.

Do you feel you get in a rut during the winter months? Oh yeah. Absolutely. My style was zip. It was jeans and a giant sweatshirt with lots of layers.

What do you like about dressing up? Just feeling comfortable. I like things that don’t feel like they are going to fall off or that I will constantly have to adjust. I like things that I can just put on and feel great for the entire day.

DSC_0138

Her silver ring is from a booth at the Eugene Saturday Market.

Who were some of your early style inspirations? I’m inspired by my grandma, actually. She always dressed really nice, even if she was just going out to the store. Everything was really nice and beautiful. She really thought about what she was going to wear.

Did she give you any good style advice? She always wanted me to dress really feminine, which I always loved. I like dresses and skirts. I barely ever wear pants, so I’ve taken that to heart.

DSC_0137

Do you think you have more of a style or an aesthetic? I’m a hippie, but I don’t know what that means in terms of my clothes. I’m not always looking for something new or trying to buy the latest thing that I see in stores. If I’ve had it forever and it still works, I’ll wear it. If someone gives something to me, that’s fantastic.

Why do you identify as a hippie? I was raised that way: living off the land in a minimalist way. We tried to conserve and recycle and not leave a footprint. I still try to bike and walk and eat really well.

Does that play into how you dress? Probably in the way that I look laid back. I try and not overthink things, so if something pops into my mind that I want to wear, I do it. That’s kind of my lifestyle.

DSC_0143

I feel there is such a definite “teacher style.” Do you think you fit into that? I think I might have to change a little bit. I feel I’m a pretty modest dresser, so I don’t think that will be the issue, but maybe I’ll have to adjust. I mix a lot of patterns, but I feel teachers are a little subtler with what they wear.

Emelia Sage

Name: Emelia Sage W.

Major: Undeclared, but leaning towards criminology and philosophy.

Year: Freshman

What would you want to do with those degrees? Maybe go into the FBI. I’m also thinking about going to law school and being a DA. I’m mostly thinking law. I like learning why people think what they do.

DSC_0075

Emelia rocks an all black and white look with a Free People crop top, an oversized black cardigan from her roommate, and a fun patterned skirt from Glass Butterfly, a boutique in Gresham.

How would you describe your personal style? Honestly, I wear what I’m comfortable in. I wake up and look at the temperature and think about would will be best for the day and what I’m going to be comforable in.

What inspired your outfit today? I liked all the black and I liked the color of the shoes being the only color. I also wear this backpack pretty much every day because it’s my favorite.

Why do you think your style changed since starting college? There are a lot more people and there is a lot more inspiration on college campuses then in my home town. Seeing all the different styles and thinking how I can be inspired by them. I can take different parts of different things and make my own look. There are a lot more opportunities for that.

What things have you been inspired by recently? I just chopped off all my hair, which was super fun and liberating and freeing. I think everyone should do it at least once because everyone can find a pixie cut that looks good on them. It’s also so easy waking up in the morning, getting it wet, and just going out the door.

DSC_0093

Her colorful sandals are Born.

Did people recognize you when you cut your hair? Going back to my high school and job in my hometown, people didn’t recognize me. But here people did.

Where else do you get inspiration from? Well my roommate is much more into clothes than I am, so I talk to her a lot about it. Also, she tells me when I look good and when I look bad.

Do you care what people think about you? I do it more for myself, honestly. I accept opinions from people I respect and that I like. But I’m always confident when I know I look nice when I’m going out into the day. If people compliment me on it, it makes me feel a lot better. But if people tell me I don’t look good, I think, “That’s nice. But I like it.”

Why do you like fashion? I like feeling good and it gives me a lot more confidence because especially when I was younger, I was a little chubby kid. So wearing things that make me feel good makes my days a lot better.

DSC_0081

What is confidence for you? Just being happy with the way you look. I don’t think it’s changing yourself to like yourself. It’s just accepting yourself to like yourself. And that’s what I’ve done.

Were there any early fashion inspirations in your life? My mom always dressed in sweaters and cardigans, and she always looked so comfy and cozy. But she always looked put together. She worked at Nordstroms when she was younger too, so she had nicer clothes. I get a lot from her.

Do you actually wear some of her clothes? Oh yeah. She hands them down to me when she doesn’t fit in them anymore. She says, “These will look good on you.” And I’m like, “Yes they will. Thank you.”

DSC_0098

Her cute (and practical) backpack is from REI.

Do you think you have more of a style or an aesthetic in how you dress? I definitely think it’s more of an aesthetic. I don’t have a singular style. It’s so many different things and changes every day. I don’t think I have a set way I dress. Honestly, I almost put on sweatpants today, so it varies.

What have you learned about college so far almost one year in? I’ve learned that all the cliches exist because they’re true. I’ve learned that career-focused majors help you a lot in your job field, but liberal arts classes will help you learn to think. I’ve taken liberal arts classes and classes pertaining to what I want to do, and I’ve learned a lot more from thinking about things and understanding them and applying my own opinion to them based on the knowledge I have rather than memorizing things and just regurgitating them back onto paper.

Gia

Name: Gia G.

Major: Art

Year: Junior

Website: greeniesr.tumblr.com

Why did you decide to study art? I actually came into school thinking I was going to be a voice major. But it’s so competitive in the music school, especially for singers, and it made me not enjoy it at all. I took one art class, and all the projects challenged me, and I actually wanted to go to class, which was never my thing. I felt like I was flourishing and I’ve felt that in every single art class I’m taking; that must mean I’m doing something right.

What kind of art are you interested in? I’m still trying to figure out what my specialty is going to be, but I’ve kind of dabbled in everything. I’m in a fibers class right now, and I’m really into making clothes and costumes. I really like going to thrift stores and Goodwill and finding things that make me think, “Ok, what can I make with this?”

DSC_0032

Gia pairs a gold print dress from her friend with a t-shirt from Hot Topic. Her cardigan is from California and her jacket is from Nordstrom Rack.

What decades or styles are inspiring your textile work? I am very much inspired by the punk rock movement and the DIY spirit of punk rock. That’s the music I listen to, and I love that aesthetic because it’s all about being yourself and being tough and being an individual, which I think is important.

Are there any specific artists within the punk rock movement? I would say Debbie Harry, Joan Jett, and Cherie Currie: just kind of the bad bitches of rock.

DSC_0058

How do you bring in modern elements to your punk aesthetic? I feel I’m on Tumblr a lot, so it’s all about the Tumblr girls. I mostly shop for vintage stuff. All of my clothes are probably old, but I take that and apply it to a modern style and modern trends.

What do you like about thrifting? First of all, it’s cheap. Second of all, I love that no one else is going to have that. I love going somewhere and getting something and thinking, “I’m not going to run into someone on the street, and be like, “Nice dress, you got it here didn’t you?” There’s just so much room for creativity.

Her green Dr. Martens were a gift from her best friend at the beginning of their friendship. The shoes, and the friendship, have proved to be long-lasting.

What have you learned about thrifting having done it for a while? That it’s a process. You have to love thrifting and it will love you back. There are times in-between jobs when I would go and fuck off at the Goodwill like three times a week because they get new stuff in all the time. You just have to keep going back. So love it, and it will love you back. That’s my advice for thrifting.

Do you think your artistic interests influence how you dress? Oh yeah, definitely. I think that when I go out, why not dress up? Why not tell everyone who’s walking by who I am without saying a word?

Her hair bow is a gift from her sister from Japan.

Were there any early style inspirations who got you into fashion? My mom and my aunt were party girls in the ’80s. I would see pictures of them in photo albums, and they were all dressed in black and had their big ass hair and dark eyes. It was very dark. I don’t want to say lady of the night, because that’s a prostitute, but they were definitely mysterious girls about town. I thought that they looked so beautiful and sexy and cool and witchy. My aunt, being a witch and everything, and I were really close. So all of that Pagan and natural stuff appealed to me.

Did she pass away? Yeah.

Do you think by wearing her clothes, you can carry on her memory? Oh yeah. It makes me feel great. We were really similar as well. Sometimes when I’m putting on stuff like this necklace, or even if I’m just walking around daily, I think, “Huh I’m exactly like her. She would be proud seeing me walk down the street.” She would think, “yeah that’s a person I would want to hang out with.” That’s what I try to do when I leave the house: be a person someone wants to hang out with.

Her necklace was her aunt’s.

You mentioned dressing “mysteriously.” How do you think that plays into how you dress? I want people to have to get to know me. There’s so much room for snap judgments. And everyone does it, but I feel like the way I dress is striking and unique in way that it makes you want to think, “Ok, I need to get deeper. I need to get to know this person.”

Do you think you had to find that confidence to stand out? Oh yeah. I struggled all throughout high school really badly with body image stuff. Only in the past two years, after getting to know the friends I have now, have I found my confidence. They also inspired my style a lot through hanging out with them. We go dancing a bunch, and we’re really active in the LGBT scene in Portland and the nightclub scene. We go out dancing and basically wear lingerie as clothing and have that sort of fetish aesthetic with the whole punk rock movement. I really like mixing the two: punk rock/fetish/black/hardcore, but also feminine.

Katie

Name: Katie E.

Major: Family and Human Services

Minor: Nonprofit Management and Journalism

Year: Sophomore

What are your career goals? I want to work in the nonprofit sector, maybe marketing or PR for a nonprofit. But I haven’t really decided yet.

Is there specific kind of nonprofit you would want to work for? Probably something relating to kid advocacy.

Katie pairs a white Forever 21 top with flowy salmon colored Pacsun pants.

What inspired your outfit? The sun. It’s nice and it’s spring, so I really like the light colors, like the pink and the pastels. I feel like in winter, I always gravitate towards black and grey, just based on my mood. So today I went for light.

How would you describe your personal style? I’m kind of all over the place. I grew up in the Berkeley area, so my style is kind of all over. It’s not vintage, but kind of urban.

Was there a moment when your style changed to what it is today? Growing up, I was a super tomboy. I would only want to wear basketball shorts. In eighth grade, I started caring a little bit more. By sophomore year, I thought, “clothes: awesome.”

Why do you think you became attracted to less tomboy styles? I sadly started caring about what how people perceived me because unfortunately, people do judge. But for the most part, I feel the way I dress is an empowerment thing. It makes me feel good about myself, which is important.

What do you like about fashion? This sounds cliché, but it’s an expression of yourself, and I feel like you are able to articulate in a nonverbal way how you’re feeling or what you’re trying to get across to the public. It’s fun.

What do you think comes off in what you’re wearing today? Hopefully inviting and friendly.

Her sandals are from American Eagle.

I love your bag. How do you decide when to invest in something? I have always loved Kate Spade because it’s super simple and really classy and classic. But sometimes, I’m just super drawn to something, and I’ll just go for it. I liked this bag because it is relatively small, but it’s actually a lot bigger than it seems. I need all the pockets, so that was also great.

How do you combine comfort while also looking so professional? I honestly don’t ever buy anything that I can’t move around in. That’s just personal preference. I think that’s my tomboy side of me.

I really like Olivia Pope from “Scandal.” I hope that I can secure an occupation where I get to dress super classy like that.

What are you most excited about for the spring? I definitely get to go into a part of my closet that I haven’t touched all year. I’m most excited for shorts and tank tops.
